Baldur's Gate 3 - Collector’s Edition
Creating A NAT-20 Collector's Edition for the 2023 Game of the Year
THE PROJECT:
Developed and published by independent video game developer Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the third entry in the legendary tabletop-style RPG series set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
After a successful collaboration on the Divinity: Original Sin II collector's edition, Larian partnered with TAKEOFF again to create materials for the Baldur’s Gate 3 launch campaign, including a premium collector’s edition for the now multi-award-winning title.
Larian wanted to create a worthy successor to the Divinity: Original Sin II collector’s edition, exceeding fans' expectations and helping set a new precedent for both Larian and the gaming industry.
Key skills:
Idea generation & concept ۰ Layout design ۰ Packaging design & opening ۰ Project Lead
Client: Larian Studios
Agency: TAKEOFF Studios
THE SOLUTION:
As Lead Creative for the collector’s edition project, I was involved from the very beginning through to the finishing touches, creating the pitch-winning concept and visual, including the initial box concept and figurine idea whilst working alongside the team at Larian.
Using the Mind Flayer—the psionic, tentacled antagonist of the game—as the starting point, I designed a custom-made outer box that allows the artwork created by the talented artists at Larian to shine—quite literally, with a metallic finish to highlight the otherworldliness of the Mind Flayer.
Continuing with the Illithid theme, the diorama is an imposing 25cm Mind Flayer vs Drow battle, dynamic and highly detailed, sure to stand out on fans’ shelves.
Accompanied by a 200-page art book with a metallic finish, the design, inspired by traditional Dungeon Master books, showcases Larian’s meticulously detailed concept art. Every spread was crafted with care and precision by yours truly to ensure the artwork remains the focal point. I drew from the box’s artwork for the hardback cover, adjusting it to achieve a gold finish that complements the overall design. I led the design team in preparing the art for print, including background isolation and adjustments.
The edition is complete with a cloth map of Faerûn, a set of D&D-inspired origin character sheets, a set of stickers (of which the chibis were my suggestion and created by the talented Nathan Reynolds at TAKEOFF), a metal tadpole keyring, a custom-engraved metal d20 based on the dice from Baldur's Gate 3, and a certificate of authenticity, this extensive collector’s edition went viral on social media. It reached 2m+ views and 227k+ likes across Instagram and TikTok, with an additional 18.5k saves and 34k+ reshares on TikTok.
Creating the collector’s edition for Baldur’s Gate 3 was an immense privilege as a long-standing fan of both Dungeons & Dragons and Larian as a games studio.
