Divinity: Original Sin II – Collector’s Edition

A shape shifting design for Larian Studios

THE PROJECT

Divinity: Original Sin II is a role-playing game developed and published by Larian Studios and was funded via Kickstarter. To make something truly special for their top-tier Kickstarter backers, Larian wanted to give them a meaningful piece of the game as a thank-you.

Partnering with TAKEOFF, Larian set out to create their first-ever collector’s edition. The main challenge was crafting a premium-feeling collector’s edition while staying within a tight budget.

THE SOLUTION

As Lead Creative at TAKEOFF, I was entrusted with bringing the collector's edition to life, overseeing every detail from concept to completion. I created the pitch-winning concept and visual, including the initial box design and concept for the interior opening display.

Using the ‘Mask of the Shapeshifter’—a helmet that allows players to change into any playable race—as the starting concept, I designed a bespoke box with an outer carton that showcases Larian’s beautiful artwork. The outer carton shows four playable races in their alive form, and when the carton is lifted off, the main box has the corresponding “undead” face underneath.

The interior display box opens like a traditional Game Master (GM) screen, and the base is lined with felt, acting as a place for GMs to cast dice rolls and as a backdrop for the figurine.

Continuing the shapeshifting theme, the figurine is of Fane, an origin character and owner of the Mask of the Shapeshifter. Imposing at 25cm tall, Fane has interchangeable heads—one of his skull and the second, a 360-degree manually rotatable Mask of the Shapeshifter, allowing the viewer to choose their favourite race.

Accompanying the figurine are two books: An Essential Compendium of Notable Rivellonian Artwork,  a 160-page artbook showcasing Larian’s stunning concept art and Modern Chronicles of Reaper's Coast, a 120-page lore book. I designed each spread with precision to keep the artwork front and centre, drawing inspiration from traditional tabletop RPG books. Both books feature debossed hardcovers with a hot foil finish, giving them an authentic, timeless feel—worthy of any Sourcerer’s bookshelf.

This collector's edition also includes a fabric map of Reaper’s Coast, a nostalgic instruction manual reminiscent of classic PC and console games, and a limited-edition numbered plaque for Kickstarter backers, which attaches to the interior box and can be used to hold GM sheets securely.

Throughout the project, I collaborated closely with the Creative Director and Production Manager at TAKEOFF to maintain high-quality standards while adhering to budget constraints. Despite the smaller-than-usual production run for editions of this kind, we successfully overcame challenges to create a truly beautiful, detail-rich edition. In addition to those sent to Kickstarter backers, 1,000 units were made available on Larian’s website and sold out within 26 hours.

Creating Larian’s Divinity: Original Sin II collector’s edition was an incredible pleasure. Their ethos of quality and attention to detail married with my own, and together we created an incredible edition.
